A NOTE FROM DR CAPLAN

As you are aware, the last 12 months have seen huge changes within the practice.

Firstly, we successfully extended the building, providing two more much needed consulting rooms and an office for Debbie Beels, our Practice Manager.

On 31^st March 2016, we saw the departure of Drs. Blockley, Morais and Mustafa, to work in other areas of Greater Manchester. We were confronted with the task of recruiting a new team of GP’s and clinicians to meet the challenges currently faced by the NHS and ensure that all of us at Park View Medical Centre continue to provide an excellent primary care service to our patients.

Dr. Saadi Hasan joined us on 1^st April 2016. An experienced GP, he previously worked in places as far apart as Oldham and New Zealand. We are delighted to have him with us and on 1^st April 2017 he will become a partner in the practice along with Dr. Esther Isaacson, Dr. Suzanne Arron and myself.

Dr. Suzanne Arron joined the practice in January 2017 and is also an experienced GP, having worked in Collyhurst for 8 years.

Dr. Esther Isaacson previously worked in London but has moved back to her home city of Manchester along with her husband and 3 children.

I am delighted that all three will become partners in the practice from 1^st April.

Our nursing team remains a vital and integral part of the practice, very ably led by our experienced Sister Angela Boucher, well supported by Sister Karen Stone. A recent welcome addition has been trainee Practice Nurse Chelsea Sammon. A fully qualified nurse, Chelsea has previously worked as a District Nurse and will train with us in those aspects of nursing care specific to General Practice.

We have also welcomed a hospital based pharmacist into our team who works afternoons and whose input into medicines management has been invaluable.

Dr. Helen Bain has been with us since November 2014, working one day a week. She is one of a group of GP’s with a special interest in emergency medicine, working four days a week in A & E at NMGH. Sadly she is leaving us at the end of March for pastures new. However, her colleague, Dr. Stephen Gerrard, who works four days a week at Rochdale A & E, remains with us, working one day a week, having also joined us in April 2016.

Dr. Qurat Malik is a long term locum whose help has been invaluable.

The practice could not function without our hardworking and dedicated administrative team led by Debbie Beels, our Practice Manager. They are:-

Veronica Rigby and her referrals management team of Siobhan Riley and Marlene Gunder.

Michelle Charity as Prescription Supervisor along with Jodie Carroll, responsible for prescriptions management.

Mel Mcudden, Pat Gowan, Denise Pearson and Fran Mitchell.

Finally and most importantly, I would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to you, our patients, for your understanding during this period of change. We recognize that it can be difficult when there are lots of new staff and your patience and support has been very much appreciated. It has made the process so much easier.

Please rest assured, despite the rumors, that I have no plans to retire.

I look forward to the continued growth and success of Park View Medical Centre, where our aim remains to continue to provide the highest standard of medical care in a holistic manner.

Long Term Illnesses

bp_at_home If you suffer from a long term illness such as asthma, diabetes, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure etc. it is important that you have regular reviews. You should aim to be review every 6-12 months. If you are new to the practice or have not been seen for some time please make an appointment to see one of the nurses. You may wish to book a telephone consultation in the first instance.

Contraceptive Services

Dr Ibezim offers a range of contraceptive services including contraceptive implant fitting and removal and coils, please arrange an appointment to discuss with her, this can be telephone appointment in the first instance.

Immunisations

Routine childhood vaccinations are available Wednesdays 13:00-16:30. We will contact you with an appointment when the vaccinations are due. If you are unable to attend the appointment provided please contact the practice.

Smear Tests

All women should have smear tests every 3 years from 25 years to 50 years and then every 5 years until 65 years. You will normally be recalled by the Health Authority. If you are think you may due a smear or have any concerns about having then please make an appointment with one of the nurses.

Domestic Abuse Aware Practice

The staff in your GP practice are trained to ask about domestic abuse and specialist workers are available to support you. Your practice is an ‘IRIS’ practice. You can talk to doctors, nurses and other staff working here if you are being hurt or controlled by your current or ex-partner, are afraid of someone at home or a member of your family.

The IRIS service is for all GP patients and staff, both women and men, aged 16 or over, whatever age, gender, sexuality, ethnicity or background. IRIS’s oldest patient so far is 87.

Social isolation can increase stress at home, impacting on you and your family’s well-being. Your GP practice is here to help you.

Please contact your GP or practice nurse for help and advice. They will refer you to the IRIS worker, the ‘IRIS Advocate Educator’.

In addition to GP consultations the practice offers a range of clinics and healthcare services:

Non-NHS Services

Some services provided are not covered under our contract with the NHS and therefore attract charges. Examples include the following:

Medicals for pre-employment, sports and driving requirements (HGV, PSV etc.)
Insurance claim forms
Passport signing
Prescriptions for taking medication abroad
Private sick notes
Vaccination certificates

The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested scales and our reception staff will be happy to advise you about them along with appointment availability.

Travel Vaccinations

Please note: We are currently only offering the NHS vaccines.

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This can be on the telephone if you prefer.

Please ensure that you complete a travel form for each person who is travelling and this will be reviewed , we will then send you a text if your require immunistaions , or you may contact surgery after 3 working days . During busy periods it may take longer for your forms to be reviewed.

We recommend that you complete these forms at least 6 weeks before you travel

We may not be able to accomadate you at short notice , Each patient requires their own appointment

PLEASE NOTE – NURSE WILL SEE A MAXIMUM OF 4 FAMILY MEMBERS IN ANY ONE SESSION. YOU MAY NEED TO ATTEND ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION.

This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel .

If you leave it too late we may not be able to offer you an appointment especially during busy periods and you may be directed to a private travel clinic which will incur a charge for all your vaccines.

Some travel vaccines are given on a private basis and incur a charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS. This includes a charge for children

We are unable to offer vaccination against Yellow Fever and Rabies and Japanese Encephalitis so you would need to access a private travel clinic for these.

Some malaria tablets will require a private prescription - we do not charge for the prescription but you will need to pay the cost of the drugs, which can vary.

healthy_apple We welcome young people and try to make our services as young people friendly as possible. We have appointments outside school/college hours on several evenings until 18:00.

Confidentiality

You can be sure that anything you discuss with any member of this practice – doctor, nurse or receptionist – will stay confidential.

Even if you are under 16, nothing will be said to anyone, including parents, other family members, care workers or tutors, without your permission. The only reason why we might have to consider passing on confidential information without your permission would be to protect you or someone else from serious harm. We would always try and discuss this with you first.

If you are being treated elsewhere, for example at a hospital or Brook Centre, it is best if you allow the doctor or nurse to inform the practice of any treatment you are receiving.

If you have any worries about confidentiality, please feel free to ask a member of staff.

Your Health

If you need to see a doctor or nurse you can choose who you see when you make an appointment. You might feel more comfortable talking to a female doctor if you're a girl, or a male doctor if you're a boy. There are some services you can refer yourself to, such as:

Smoking: Don't start! If you already have started smoking and find it hard to stop there is help available. Either make a stop smoking appointment at the surgery or you can attend any pharmacy.

Manchester Health Visiting Service offers comprehensive advice and support to parents and carers of children form pre birth to four and a half years.

Healthy Child drop in sessions for well babies are provided in various venues including childrens centres
